Put In - Located where Highway 42(Advent Ferry Road) crosses the Cape Fear River. This is a Wildlife Access area and has a nice parking lot and one small boat ramp.
Distance/Time - 16.4 miles/6 1/2 hours
Difficulty - Above Average, river setting so not many places to take out and rest, GPS way pointed various places found to take a break.
Trip Directions - Decided to try and make Jordan dam, 8 mile trip one way. The weather was cool and the wind was going to be low for the day. The trip turned out real nice as the Corp. of Engineers were dumping water from Jordan Lake, so the return trip was much easier as the current flow let me average at least 4 MPH. The trip up to the dam was slower, around 2+ MPH, but since I was not tired yet it was a good work out. The trip does give you an objective every mile or so. From the put-in the first is McKay Island, I took the right side, the next is the Deep River and Haw River split (Mermaid's Point), followed by the old railroad bridge and old US1. The last is the new US1 and finally the dam and tailrace area. There is a nice place to beach at the end of the riprap. The restrooms were closed because of no water. I marked a few places along the way as waypoints that you can take out pretty easily and rest.
Scenery - Saw two eagles (grown male and immature adult), turtles, egrets, ducks, and a few barred owls calling as I paddled by.
Hazards - Motor boats and debris.
