Put In - There are two ramps in the park, one at the marina and one at a public boat ramp on the other side of the park. The marina one is smaller and less used, the other ramp gives you access to the New River.
Distance/Time - Trip 1: 3.8 miles; Trip 2: 7.3 miles
Difficulty - Average.
Trip Directions - Since I got into Claytor Lake late in the afternoon, I just setup camp and then did an evening paddle in the main section of the lake to the dam. Very nice homes line the lake along with a large farm with cows. The next morning's trip was from the public boat ramp and I headed up stream on the New River. I ask a fisherman about a Boy Scout camp that was supposed to be near by and he said it was back at the park point on the other side of the lake. I decided to head back to find the camp and ran into a group of scouts sailing back into the Claytor Lake Boy Scout Aquatics Center. It is a brand new facility and really nice. The Blue Ridge Mountains Council runs this high adventure camp. One of the staff members gave me a very nice tour of all the facilities. A troop from Charlotte was up for the weekend and the OA was doing service work around the camp.
Scenery - The lake is very developed with homes, as you head up river it does become more rural.
Hazards - Motor boats.
