Put In - Located where Highway 42(Advent Ferry Road) crosses the Cape Fear River. This is a Wildlife Access area and has a nice parking lot and one small boat ramp.
Distance/Time - 14.2 miles/6 hours
Difficulty - Above Average, river setting so not many places to take out and rest, GPS way pointed various places found to take a break.
Trip Directions - Instead of heading to Jordan Dam, I took the Deep River branch. The weather was cool and overcast and the wind was going to be low for the day. Not much water was being released so both the up and return trip were on slow moving water. The trip does give you an objective every mile or so. From the put-in the first is McKay Island, I took the left side, the next is the Deep River and Haw River split (Mermaid's Point), followed by the old railroad bridges and old/new US1. The paddle ends at the Lockville dam just upstream of an old boat ramp that is private. But I did use it to take a break and eat lunch. I also explored the 1500KW Lockville hydroelectric facility.
Scenery - Not much wildlife, a lone osprey hunting and that was about it.
Hazards - Motor boats and debris.
