Put In - Located on 98 between Six Forks and Stoney Hill Road at the bridge that crosses Falls Lake. Very nice parking area on the right heading east towards Wake Forest. About a 100 yard portage down to the water on an old asphalt road. Fishing is popular here.
Distance/Time - 6 miles/5 hours
Difficulty - Hard
Trip Directions - Head north from put in, go under the bridge and then bear left up the channel. You can see the BW Wells boat ramp straight out from the bridge. But you do not want to take that spar of the lake.
Scenery - Normal lake scenery with heavy boat traffic. Boaters call this the S curve. The destination is the BW Wells old homestead at the top of the S. You can see the trail when you make the bend. Also you can see Zigler Rock a large outcropping that has a Do Not Swim sign on it. Further down from Zigler Rock are a set of cliffs that are popular for jumping off of. I like to pull the boat in at the sandy area before Zigler Rock and hike the trail to the old homestead. You can visit the house and out buildings. Mr. Ray the old caretaker for BW Wells lives here also in an adjacent house. He has perpetual rights to live here. Boy Scout Eagle projects abound around the homestead. Hurricane Fran took down the big oak tree and destroyed part of the porch on the house.
Hazards - Boat traffic, be wary.
