Falls Lake to Eno River IV Trip
Put In - From intersection of I-85, exit 182 (SR1632-Red Mill Rd). Travel Red Mill Rd. west 4.5 miles to stop sign. Turn right on SR1794 travel 0.5 miles to stop sign and turn right onto SR1632, follow into area. There is one ramp for motor boats, the best place for put in for kayaks is to the right of the boat ramp. Very muddy at high water and various rocks around to scratch your boat. You can park near the ramp on the right and unload and then park your car back in the parking lot.
Distance/Time - 10.1 miles/4 hours
Difficulty - Difficult
Trip Directions - Headed right from the boat ramp trying to make Penny's Bend Nature Preserve. I ended up turning around at Old Oxford road after making it through the rapids below the bridge. The next set of rapids upstream were too low to navigate. I was only about 100 feet from the put in at Penny's Bend Nature Preserve. Traveled a little ways up the Little River. Will do this on the next trip, from the boat ramp and then up the Little River.
Scenery - Started early to beat the heat and ended up having a very good trip using the shade from the overhanging trees and the nice breeze a blowing. Lots of birds, turtles and such. Coming back was much easier as the current gave you a slight push.
Hazards - There is no real nice stopping points along the route as the banks are so high. I was able to find a sandbar below the Old Oxford bridge that was a nice place to rest. I ended up walking through the rapids with the dog in the boat, as it was quite low.
