Falls Lake - Half Marathon Trip
Put In - Located left of the dam spillway, down by the picnic area. A nice trail from the parking area leads down to the water Access is off of Falls of Neuse Road, parking is just before the dam overpass. Gates are only open 8am-5:30pm daily, Monday thru Friday only.
Distance/Time - 13.3 miles/5 hours
Difficulty - Average
Trip Directions - Asked the wife if she would be the shuttle person which I never thought of before and she agreed to drop me off at the dam and then pick me up however far I went. If you look at Falls Lake in length, the half way point is around the Highway 50 boat ramp. So, that was the plan and it worked out really well. She did miss the entrance to the Highway 50 boat ramp as there is no sign heading north, but there is one heading south. Since I did around 13 miles, it was like a half marathon. Not having to worry about vehicle logistics was nice, just keep on paddling. The trip has some nice break points, Blue Jay Point and then Holly Point campground for lunch.
Scenery - Another beautiful fall day around 70 degrees and low wind. Saw a turkey, some hunters I think hunting for turkey on a pontoon boat, an egret or two, and various birds. The lake is down around 2 feet, hoping for recovery over the winter.
Hazards - Fog in the morning and then some boats around.
