Put In - Located in Holly Point State Park on New Light Road. Take Six Forks to 98 and cross 98 which becomes New Light Road. Stay on New Light Road until you see the park on the right. Shinleaf park you will pass on the way on the right. I camped in site 58, which has a 25 yard trail down to a nice a cove. The lake was at full pool, so the put-in was just a slight cutout near the bank. I had to clear the rocks on the bottom to make the put-in easier Cost is 20 dollars for a non-electric/water site.
Distance/Time - 8 Miles, 4.3 Miles, 5.3 Miles/2+ hours
Difficulty - Average/Easy
Trip Directions - Made 3 trips, the first was up to Purnell Road and then up Buckhorn Creek. I had never been this far up Buckhorn Creek before because the lake was always below full pool. The next morning was to the B.W. Wells Homestead(Rock Cliff Farm). Did a night trip to the New Light Bridge area. Had very nice cool low humidity weather the whole time.
Scenery - Sunday had many people camping and lots of boats. By Sunday evening the place was deserted, so had the whole area to my self except for the Camp Host and a few other RV folks. Saw lots of egrets and various birds. Watched a boy wake board such that he could use a short line and pull himself close to the boat and then surf the standing wave near the boats prop. Never had seen this before. He would throw the rope back to the boat once in the standing wave and then just surf along. He was good until the boat had to turn however. I later learned that this boat can take on water ballast and cause a large standing wave because it is so low in the water in the rear. The evening paddle turned out really nice as I did not know it was a full moon or close to it. I turned the corner coming out of a creek and the moon was rising.
Hazards - Motor boats were out in force on Sunday.
