Falls Lake - Rolling View II Trip
Put In - Located at the boat ramp beach area at Rolling View State Park. A nice sandy beach near an erosion control railroad tie. Parking is in the area parking lot. It is easier to use the beach than the actual boat ramp area. I spent about an hour trying to find a put in on Boyce Mill Rd and Santee Rd. Boyce Mill was just to far to portage. Might work if you have a four wheel drive vehicle. The Santee Rd access is very possible if you want to bush whack the plant growth and poison ivy. I decided to pass. Maybe in the fall when the plants are down.
Distance/Time - 8.3 miles/4 hours
Difficulty - Difficult
Trip Directions - Left from the put in at 8AM to beat the heat. Again as I headed north I ran into very stiff winds. For some reason this part of the lake is always windy. Made it all the way up to the old Jimmy Rogers Bridge and beyond. Had to turn around because of low water, lake is down about 3 feet at this point in the summer. On the way back found a trail from the lunch stop to Shaw road. Actually could put in here, if you wanted to walk the quarter of a mile down the trail with your kayak. A lot of trash around this area because of the fishing from the bank. Very hot day, had to dunk the dog a few times to help and keep her cool. Was off the lake before noon. Longest trip I have every paddled so far to date.
Scenery - Found a set of eagle's nests, white heron, different kinds of birds, lots of deer tracks around.
Hazards - Wind and low water because of summer conditions.
