Put In - The Graham-Mebane Lake is located off of Bason Rd. in Mebane. A straight shot from Raleigh out Interstate 40 West. Takes about an hour driving, The cost is 4 dollars to launch a kayak and is open dusk to dawn except for Sunday it opens at 1PM. Has an office with a snack machine and a set of paper maps of the lake. The lake used to be called Quaker Lake, was expanded from 150 acres to its present size of 650 acres in 1994, The old dam divides the old section from the new.
Distance/Time - 9.2 miles/3 1/2 hours
Difficulty - Average, the lake was slightly above full pool. Stagg Creek that feeds the lake from the north was running very strong because of all the rain we have had.
Trip Directions - I headed towards the new section of the lake and Stagg Creek. I thought I was going to be able to paddle more of the side coves, but it really is a large lake. Never was able to paddle the old section. The lake has homes on parts of it and a large high school. But no docks or boats are allowed it looks like. No swimming is posted also. It drizzled and rained off and on the whole trip, but it was nice and cool with the cloud cover. I did have a dog that was owned by the person taking your launch fee, that bugged the heck out of my dog the whole time. There were signs saying dogs must be on a leash, but this was not the case. The dog actually jumped through the back tailgate into the back seat when I was not watching. I had to pull my dog out for it to exit, it was very fast. It looked like a puppy pit bull and seemed nice enough, just a pain. I did finally figure out it was scared of the water and would not get with ten feet of the shoreline. So, if we stayend near the shore it would not approach us. The dog loved to chase cars too.
Scenery - The birds were out in full force, from egrets, ducks, geese, and a swan. Saw evidence of beavers but never saw one. The shoreline is quite deep so taking out is not that easy, had to find a cove with debris so as to be able to get out. I was able to explore an old homestead that was falling down, and whomever abandoned it left a lot of stuff.
Hazards - Moving water up Stagg Creek.
