Harris Lake - Cary Branch Trip
Put In - From intersection of NC42 and SR1916 (Corinth Rd), take NC42 East 2.0 miles. Turn left on SR1912 (Christian Chapel Road). Continue 0.5mi and turn right onto Cross Point Rd and follow into area.
Distance/Time - 12 miles/5 hours First trip of the 2012 season. Was a very nice overcast, cool, and calm wind day. Great way to start the year.
Difficulty - Average
Trip Directions - From the boat ramp, I headed to the dam and then stayed on the southern side of the Cary Branch. At first I thought they had logged this area and had a controlled burn, but then noticed this looked like tornado damage. I ask a fisherman and sure enough this was the tornado that hit Raleigh on April 16, 2011. On the return to the boat ramp I took the northern side and the scenery was much better.
Scenery - Lots of birds; egrets, ducks, turtles, etc. I found an old stone dam near the Cass Holt Road access. I had never paddled all the way up the creek, I guess because of the Hydrilla, but now it is all dormant because of winter. The stone dam is now broken on the right side, but you can see how they channeled the water down to some kind of concrete structure. Not sure what it was used for other than a water source. Also, found an access road that led to the Capital Kawanis Club Pond. An old building of bathrooms and showers is falling down. They did have a permanent port-a-potty. Looks like this is used for hunting as tree stands are in various locations.
Hazards - Motor boats as lots of fishing going on today.
