Jordan Lake - New Hope Overlook Trip
Put In - New Hope Overlook is accessed from US-1. From US-1 take the Pea Ridge Road exit and then turn left on to W H Jones Road, following signs to the park. Here is what the Jordan Lake website says about the campground: For those who prefer a more primitive campsite, New Hope Overlook offers 24 campsites nestled in the woods. These sites range from 100 yards to a half mile from the parking lot. Or, reach your campsite by water; canoe to the area from a nearby boat ramp. Each site has a picnic table, grill and lantern post. Mulch toilets and drinking water are provided nearby. From the boat ramp(closed at 9pm) it is .9 mile to the A9 campsite. I decided to hike in from the parking lot with all my junk. Used a dolly and the kayak dolly to do it in three trips. Then I had all the comforts of home.
Distance/Time - 5.2 miles towards the dam, 5.1 miles night paddle with half moon, 4.8 miles morning paddle.
Difficulty - Average
Trip Directions - Did the normal three paddles. On the morning paddle I ran into a dog search and rescue team that was training. The victim drove in around 8:00am and headed off into the woods. The dogs then were given the victims scent from something in the car and the search was on.
Scenery - Lake level is a full pool, which makes a nice paddle all around, since creeks and inlets are passable. Bird island was the most interesting. Various species of birds had made nests or where just relaxing in this small island with trees.
Hazards - Mainly you have to be careful of motor boats, especially from the campsite launch as this is a very small channel and boats are roaring up and down the lake here.
