Jordan Lake - New Hope Overlook Trip
Put In - New Hope Overlook is accessed from US-64 or US-1. From US-64, take SR-1008 south from Wilsonville (midway between Pittsboro and Apex) and follow the signs. From US-1 take the Merry Oaks exit, drive through town to SR-1910; turn right and follow it to New Hope Overlook (watch for signs). Used the boat ramp at New Hope Overlook campground. Here is what the Jordan Lake website says about the campground: For those who prefer a more primitive campsite, New Hope Overlook offers 24 campsites nestled in the woods. These sites range from 100 yards to a half mile from the parking lot. Or, reach your campsite by water; canoe to the area from a nearby boat ramp. Each site has a picnic table, grill and lantern post. Mulch toilets and drinking water are provided nearby. From the boat ramp it is .9 mile to the A7 campsite.
Distance/Time - 2.3 miles from Boat Ramp to Campsite, 4.8 miles night paddle with full moon, 4.1 miles morning paddle, .9 mile from campsite to boat ramp.
Difficulty - Average
Trip Directions - Basically I went towards(south) the dam for the evening paddle. In the morning that paddle was more north and west, making a big loop.
Scenery - Lake level is a full pool, which makes a nice paddle all around, since creeks and inlets are passable. Found a very nice Osprey nest and both male and female were guarding it. Used my monocular to get a set of good images with it against the camera lens. Also, took a hike along an access road next the Osprey nest. Looks like the park has had a control burn in this area.
Hazards - Mainly you have to be careful of motor boats, especially from the campsite launch as this is a very small channel and the bass boats are roaring up and down the lake here.
