Put In - From Raleigh, Longwood Boat Ramp is a nice drive up Highway 50 to Creedmoor and then take 15 north through Oxford. The boat ramp is on your left after entering Virginia.
Distance/Time - Buckhorn Creek, 7.5 miles, 4 hours
Difficulty - Above Average, because of the high water areas.
Trip Directions - Since I had camped here a few times I knew with the lake at 10 feet above full pool(306.8) that it would be navigatable to Buckhorn Creek across a small peninsula. This high level of water was because of Tropical Storm Ida from the previous week. I ended up heading around the large island near Buckhorn Creek and sighted a sign in the woods and knew no one could own this land since it had no access road. I pulled in and found that this was a High Adventure Camp for the Old North State Council in North Carolina. It was very interesting based on the old pump to fill two water towers for the dining hall and shower. I spend a good hour walking around and inspecting the place. On the way back I stopped at the Longwood campsite and swimming area to see how high the water had come.
Scenery - it was a chilly day with high clouds. Saw a few birds but not much else since it felt like a winter day.
Hazards - High water areas.
