Put In - Campsite 72, located at County Line State Park after taking exit 223 on I-85. From Raleigh, this is a straight shot up US-1 and then to I-85. Non-electric sites are 15 dollars. The entrance was being staffed when I arrived and the ranger pointed me to Campsite 72 which is very secluded on a gravel road and has a very nice path to a put-in. The campsite is on the leeward side of the park, so it is wind protected. I ran into the wind at Kimball Point two weeks earlier when I camped on the windward side of the park. The next day was to further explore the Roanoke River at US 1.
Distance/Time - 2 trips, trip 1 to Henderson Point and Presbyterian Point, 9.4 miles, 2nd trip - 2.9 miles at sunset/dusk.
Difficulty - Difficult because of high wind.
Trip Directions - My mission was to visit Presbyterian Point camp that my kids used to go to when young. The camp has been bought by the Boy Scouts of America and they are having some trouble getting a permit to use the access road to the camp. So for now the camp is 'Under Maintenance' . They are cutting the grass and that is about it. Had a Cub Scout Family campout here at least 17 years ago.
Hazards - High wind. This part of the lake is very wide open and the wind was at 15MPH or more. Had at least foot waves to deal with on the way over and back. I put the PFD on the dog, tied my hat on, put my cell phone in the PFD pocket and just plugged away. The water is still cold enough that if I would have gone in, I would have had to call for help. Ticks were also out this weekend, falling from the trees.
