Kerr Lake - Ivy Hill Not! Trip
Put In - I originally was going to camp at Ivy Hill Park in Virginia but when I arrived I found out that the campsites had been closed because of budget constraints. So I headed over to my favorite campsite on Kerr Lake, Longwood Park. Take Hwy 15 S from Clarksville, VA, approximately 5 miles and entrance will be on the right. Follow signs. From Raleigh, Longwood Park is a nice drive up Highway 50 to Creedmoor and then take 15 north through Oxford. The park is on your left after entering Virginia. The Grassy Creek put in is back a few miles south on 15 till you see a sign pointing to Grassy Creek. It is about 10 miles from the campsite.
Distance/Time - 3 trips, Saturday afternoon trip, 3.8 miles, Saturday evening trip to watch the sunset, 4.6 miles, 3rd trip on Sunday - 7.5 miles on Grassy Creek.
Difficulty - Average. My old 1986 Volvo bit the dust, so I was trying out my new and old mini-van that I now got from my wife. It has air conditioning so the dog loves it. I ended up buying Yakima LandShark saddles and they work real nice. Just push the boat on from the rear of the vehicle. I did drop the boat unloading the first time at the campsite and put a nice scratch on the back door lift.
Trip Directions - I had not paddled for a while, so I just took it easy. On Sunday I headed to Grassy Creek to finish all the creeks in this area. The water level is at least 5 feet down this time of year so I was able to get under the low bridge to Grassy Creek. The water was low and the only way to make it to Grassy Creek was to follow the actual creek channel. Otherwise, you would get stuck. A fisherman showed me the PVC pipe that had been post to show the channel. The GPS also showed the way. I made it all the way to the end of Grassy Creek, stopped by rocks and rapids. It was an over cast day so nice and cool. Lots of wildlife out and about, saw a young egret learning to fly.
Hazards - None.
