Kerr Lake - Longwood Park II Trip
Put In - Take Hwy 15 S from Clarksville, VA, approximately 5 miles and entrance will be on the right. Follow signs. From Raleigh, Longwood Park is a nice drive up Highway 50 to Creedmoor and then take 15 north through Oxford. The park is on your left after entering Virginia.
Distance/Time - 3 trips, trip 1 up Beaver Pond, 5.7 miles, 2nd trip - 4.1 miles at night, 3rd a morning trip to the Merifield Wildlife Management Area, 7.4 miles.
Difficulty - Above Average, because of the wind. Always windy in this area.
Trip Directions - The trip to Beaver Pond required a portage across the road, since the water was up it was a nice paddle up the creek if it was not for a downed tree could have gone much further. The night paddle was to the BSA Camp to scope it out again, always like to visit Boy Scout stuff. This was a full moon so the trip back was great to watch the moon rise. Just realized that on a full moon the sun set at the same time as the moon rising. The final morning trip was just a casual paddle to the wildlife area, just took it easy. Setup my tent alarm every time I went out paddling. Forgot the last day and triggered the alarm, not as loud as inside the house, but it would probably scare someone off.
Scenery - Saw a beaver or two, slapping the water. Lots of egrets and they were a little skittish. Had the whole side of the park to my self as it was Sunday night. I was a day late for camping as a large number of tornados swept across North Carolina, one in Raleigh touched down a mile away from my house. It did quite a bit of damage and four children were killed. Quite a few RVs as spring break was happening this week for Virginia schools.
Hazards - Wind.
