Kerr Lake - Rudds Creek III Trip
Put In - Located on US Highway 58, 8 miles east of Clarksville, VA. From Raleigh, Rudds Creek Park is a nice drive up Highway 50 to Creedmoor and then take 15 north through Oxford to Clarksville. Before Clarksville proper is a new bridge over the lake to Highway 58 East. This is the fast way, if you go into Clarksville, then you can visit the town and then take the old bridge over the lake to Highway 58 East.
Distance/Time - 3 trips. 1st trip - 2PM west side of the lake around the wildlife area, 7.3 miles. Evening trip to watch the sunset, 4.5 miles. 3rd trip - 6.4 miles up Rocky Branch Channel, Saturday morning. I was in Campsite 49 which is closer to the cove since the water was down almost 3 feet and away from the road noise of Highway 58. I came home by going east on Highway 58 to Route 4 which goes over the dam and then intersects with I-85 back to Raleigh. The park attendant also required me to pay for two nights because it was the weekend. This is a new rule I did not know about at the time, but sure enough the website states this requirement. So, it cost me 40 dollars for one night. Oh well, the parks do need the money.
Difficulty - Average.
Trip Directions - Third time camping at Rudds Creek Park. The lake level was at 297.2 feet, which is almost 3 feet below normal pool. Sunset was at 7:36pm. The Saturday trip was up Rocky Branch Channel. Normal egrets, maybe a beaver slapping the water, and one deer in the evening near the shore. I captured a picture of Venus and the Moon which was setting that was quite nice to watch.
Hazards - None.
