Kerr Lake - Spewmarrow Creek Trip
Put In - Take Hwy 15 S from Clarksville, VA, approximately 5 miles and entrance will be on the right. Follow signs. From Raleigh, Longwood Park is a nice drive up Highway 50 to Creedmoor and then take 15 north through Oxford. The park is on your left after entering Virginia. The Grassy Creek put in is back a few miles south on 15 till you see a sign pointing to Grassy Creek. It is about 10 miles from the campsite.
Distance/Time - 3 trips. 1st trip - noon towards the Grassy Creek boat ramp, 7.5 miles. Evening trip to watch the sunset, 2.7 miles. 3rd trip - 5.8 miles at the Grassy Creek boat ramp up Spewmarrow Creek.
Difficulty - Above average because of portage.
Trip Directions - Third time camping at Longwood Park and then drive over to Grassy Creek to paddle that area. This area has four major creeks which can be paddled for quite a distance. The lake level was at 305 feet, which is 5 feet above normal pool. This allowed me to make it all the way to the head waters of Spewmarrow Creek. I did have to portage over the road as all the bridges were not passable underneath because of the high water. Sunset was at 7:30pm, thanks to the new daylight saving time change. Spring is about two weeks behind Raleigh, so not much new foliage. But the weather was just great and the camping was free since the season does not start till April 1.
Hazards - High water.
