Put In -
Located in Steele Crk Marina off US Highway 39,
8
miles west of Henderson.
From
Raleigh, the marina is a nice drive up Highway 1 to Henderson and then
take 39 north to 1308. A sign points the way. The marina is
privately run and not associated with NC state at all. And it shows,
as the camping areas are very old and primitive. Basically, just a
picnic table, but the site I had was very close to the water and very
scenic. I had to do some trash pick-up to get the campsite nice.
The restrooms are down by the boat ramp and I saw no water for use, so bring
your own. The cost is 10 dollars, 5 dollars cheaper than a state park.
I ran into lots of folks who I think just live in the electric campsites
full time or live outside the marina and come in to visit during the day.
The area is basically setup for power boats, boat houses, and sailing craft.
These areas are well maintained and monitored. A wedding was being
setup for the weekend, so part of the camping area was closed.

Hibernia State Park - 7.3 miles

Trip Directions - I made the usual three trips when camping. The
wind in this area is constant. I think that is why the yacht club is
located at this marina. There are quite a few sail boats anchored in
the coves. The boat ramp is near the campsites and the marina is at
least a mile north on a separate road. I covered the south portion and
the north was up to Hibernia State Park.

Scenery -
The wildlife was hard to capture with the camera. I saw egrets, deer,
various ducks at the marina.
-
Hazards -
None as it was Wednesday and absolutely no one was on the water.
