Trip Directions - Decided on a warm winter day to visit Lake Benson in Garner as I had never been to the lake or park before. Well, I assumed the boat house would be closed for the winter, but never did I think that a big sign would say: "No launching of private boats". I actually called the Garner Parks and Recreation, since they had their telephone number posted also, and yes it was illegal to use the lake with your own kayak. You only can use their John boats. Some lame excuse that Raleigh has made them do this because this is going to be a water source for Raleigh. But then you see big homes being built along the shore and I imagine the run off from the yards and stuff is pretty yucky. So, I just took a hike in the park which is nice and found the famous 'White Deer' and house that Garner had built for it. The big news a few years ago was that a few people had broken into the house and burned the poor stuffed 'White Deer'. But it looks like they fixed him up pretty good with putty and stuff. Here is the story: White Deer
Scenery - Nice park and trails, wish I could have paddled the lake....
Hazards - not a one.
