Put In - The boathouse and launch are located on Bahama Rd off 501 N Durham. Look for the entrance after you cross the bridge on Bahama Rd. It costs 5 dollars to launch and the park closes at 6pm and 8pm come June. The Duke rowing team practices here. And bring your own water, as the well water here is terrible.
Distance/Time - 6 miles/4 hours
Difficulty - Easy
Trip Directions - I headed right from the launch and continued till I hit the Flat River and was blocked by rocks. A real nice paddle with nice rock outcroppings. Paddled back to the boathouse and headed towards the dam and found a real nice rock for lunch. Since it was quite hot, decided to return and do the dam side of the lake on another day. I also then headed up the the Spruce Pine Lodge by car and hiked the camping areas and rope course they have there. A great place for a scout campout.
Scenery - Saw many kinds of birds(egrets, ducks, geese), a couple beavers, and a female turkey. A nice quite lake. On the way home, came across a sign to William B. Umstead's gravesite. It was at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. A lot of history in this cemetery as many names are old family names you here about in politics and government.
Hazards - none.
