Put In - The boathouse and launch are located at the end of 33rd Street in Butner, NC. A very easy trip from Raleigh, take Highway 50 north to Creedmoor, 56 west to 33rd till it dead ends into the entrance to the lake. It costs 3 dollars to launch and the lake is open year round from dawn to dusk. Most maps show the lake named as Lake Butner or Butnier, but the real name is RD Holt.
Distance/Time - 9.3 miles/4 1/2 hours
Difficulty - Average, very windy
Trip Directions - I headed for the northern end of the lake. A very windy day, but the lake has some nice coves and hills that block the wind. Found an access road that really is probably a private road. At the end is a nice Beware of Dog sign, so I turned back.
Scenery - Very quiet lake and many nice coves to explore. This lake is really pristine. Wildlife was everywhere from deer, turtles, egret, hawks, buzzards, and ducks. The top northern part of the lake is the main feed and a very nice place for lunch near the rapids. This portion of the lake is part of the Butner military base and warning signs are all along the shore line. Also, some kind of wood splitting or sledge hammer noise was coming from the western side of the lake all day. No idea what this was, but it never stopped.
Hazards - Hydrilla can be found in most of the shallow areas.
