Put In - The boat ramp is located near Mayo Park and is located off Hwy. 49 north of Roxboro on Neal's Store Road (SR 1515).
Distance/Time - 11.9 miles/5 hours
Difficulty - Average.
Trip Directions - I headed north from the boat ramp towards Progress Energy's coal powered power plant. A very nice paddle on a beautiful calm day, little chilly to start. I was able to get very near to the power plant using a boat ramp road that lead right to the plant. When I arrived at the boat ramp, two workers from the plant where enjoying the scenery on a work break, they said I could not go up the boat ramp road without a hard hat, however, no signs said so and signs were posted that this was a no hunting area. So, after they left I did hike up to the plant, which at the fence/gate then did say no trespassing within the plant boundary. I think the whole area is used for hunting and hiking and open to the public. I then paddled to the dam and was able to access the dam road and visit the dam spillway into Mayo Creek and also hiked up to the huge railroad area where coal is brought in to the plant. I felt like I was in a train yard.
Scenery - The lake is very pristine and so clear you can see the bottom in most shallow places. Here is a lake with basically no development runoff, so the water is very clear. Also, the bottom seems to be mostly shale type rock instead of mud. I saw deer, two turkeys, eagle, osprey and various ducks.
Hazards - Hunting season.
