Put In - Located near Buffalo road. Turn in on Elizabeth Road right before the bridge. This access is maintained by the City of Raleigh.
Take Out - Since this was the annual Neuse River Cleanup, we decided to paddle down to Milburnie Dam and then return back to Buffalo Road after depositing our trash with Ed and his pontoon boat.
Distance/Time - 8.7 miles/6 hours
Difficulty - Above Average
Trip Directions - From the put in head down stream and then back picking up trash as you go along. In talking with Ed who has a house on the river, the Milburnie Dam is slated to be removed. This removal will basically destroy the back waters in this area. As you would expect the homeowners along the river are against this and have been mounting a campaign against the family and company that are working to remove the dam. It turns out that the family that owns the dam will get stream credits that they then can sell to other companies to use on other rivers. Kind of like Cap and Trade for river mucking. The proposal is here. I lean to leaving the dam alone since it has been in place for over a hundred years. But as they say follow the money. After we returned to the put-in, two crazy guys showed up to launch their homemade raft. Pictures below, it was a hoot to watch them.
Scenery - Urban area river scenery. This is the best and scenic part of the urban Neuse river. The back waters of Milburnie Dam makes the water higher and clearer. The Raleigh Greenway can be seen at various places also. Also, some nice back water swamps can be navigated.
Hazards - Trash!
