Philpott Lake - Salthouse Branch IV
Put In - Salthouse Branch campgrounds on Philpott Lake. 2 hour 40 minute drive from Raleigh. I camped for a fourth time at campsite 87. It is on the lake, water level was down around 10 feet so had to walk a bit to the water.
Distance/Time - Trip 1: 5.4 miles; Trip 2: 4 miles.
Difficulty - Average.
Trip Directions - Did not paddle much as the dog turned up sick for some reason. First time she ever balked at going kayaking, one trip she just ran back to the campsite. Would not eat or drink, but after a nights sleep she seemed better but still basically just laid in the boat instead of her perky self. Since the dog was sick I just decided to head to Mabry Mill and Lover's Leap on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Was a nice afternoon road trip. Also, drove by Tuggles Gap a bike restaurant that I will stop at next time. Weather was very nice and was great for sleeping. Nothing beats waking up on a cool morning in the woods.
Scenery - The moon was really nice, along with my new flashlight that allowed me to really look in the woods at night and scan the bottom since the lake is so clear. Eerie to see fish at night with the light shining so deep into the water. Got the flashlight based on a guy at work that has one when he is gigging at the coast. A very powerful light for such a small footprint. Not cheap however....
Hazards - Power boats.
