Put In - Boat ramp in Weldon, NC; located in the River Falls Park. There is an old Grist Mill here also. The famous Weldon Falls rapid is upstream of the put-in. The actual boat ramp and parking lot are under construction, they are expanding the ramp to three.
Distance/Time - 9.8 miles/4 hours
Difficulty - Average, requires being aware of moving water. No rest areas along the way other than a boat ramp/sand bar near Halifax, but this was close to the take out.
Trip Directions - This was the second annual Roanoke Ramble. It is very well run and a lot of fun. The Brunswick stew was really good at the closing lunch. They provided donuts, muffins, etc at the put-in also. Around 150 people were on the river. The take-out is a private fishing club below Halifx, so a normal paddle in this section of the river would require you to take out at the Halifax ramp or the Tilley camping platform. After the trip I toured the town of Halifax, it is really nice. Similar to Williamsburg. There are many historic signs in town dating to the formation of our country.
Scenery - Lots of boats on the water, so you ran into all types of boats. I just took it easy and paddled at a consistent speed and finished around noon. Saw lots of turtles for some reason and they were quite large. This was a very cold start(33 degrees), but soon warmed up. The river does channel the wind, standard eastern North Carolina breeze.
Hazards - Moving water.
