Roanoke River - Allen Creek Trip
Put In - Virginia Wildlife Access ramp where US 1 crosses the Roanoke River. Small boat ramp, very busy and no facilities. No launch fees either.
Distance/Time - 14.9 miles/6 hours
Difficulty - Average, requires being aware of moving water and motor boats. And as I have commented before, hidden tree stumps just below the water on river's edge..
Trip Directions - Decided to head to Allen Creek which is 3 miles from the boat ramp. Then I was going to try and go as far as I could. Ended up another 3+ miles and the water level was to low to continue. Very nice creek which runs along the Dan Cross Wildlife Management Area. I was able to take a small side creek to a road that let me hike up to one of the entrances to the area. Glad it was Sunday and no hunting allowed as the hunting in this area could be high. I had to portage over one downed tree, but it had caused a nice sandbar to form so it was quite easy to get over. It was a cool, no wind, overcast day, great for paddling.
Scenery - The wildlife was great, saw one eagle, egrets, a turtle, osprey, a beaver, and I think a turkey. I ate lunch at the same house that was being built on my last trip to the dam, only sandy beach area around. It was being worked on, so I kept it short. Nice old railroad trestle close to the end of the creek.
Hazards - Those pesky hidden stumps along the river's edge.
