Roanoke River - Flat Creek Trip
Put In - Virginia Wildlife Access ramp where US 1 crosses the Roanoke River. Small boat ramp, very busy and no facilities. No launch fees either.
Distance/Time - 9.8 miles/5 hours
Difficulty - Average, requires being aware of moving water and motor boats. And as I have commented before, hidden tree stumps just below the water on river's edge..
Trip Directions - Headed down river on the south side for shade as it was going to be a hot day. A few nice short side paddles on the way. A mile or so down I then headed towards Flat Creek. Flat Creek is a nice paddle all the way up to a series of three beaver dams. I was able to pull the boat across two of them, but the last one was 3 feet high. Amazing what beavers can do. I then headed back and tried to take a short cut thru a passage that showed up on the GPS map. Sure enough it was there but the beavers have been there also and it look worst as you went in. So, I had to back track and head up the main river and it had become quite windy.
Scenery - Very nice trip, saw some nice homes and then it became all creek. As mentioned the beavers are very active in this area. On the way back found an osprey nest on an old duck blind. She was not happy I was messing around near the nest.
Hazards - Those pesky hidden stumps along the river's edge.
