Put In - Virginia Wildlife Access ramp where US 1 crosses the Roanoke River. Small boat ramp, very busy and no facilities. No launch fees either.
Distance/Time - 13.3 miles/5+ hours
Difficulty - Average, requires being aware of moving water and motor boats. And as I have commented before, hidden tree stumps just below the water on river's edge..
Trip Directions - Headed up stream towards the dam. Was on the river by 7AM, boat ramp was empty and the river was perfectly flat with mist from the cool night and warm water. Also no current existed so the paddle to the dam was quite easy. Once at the dam, however, the horn sounded and the gates were opened. Some fisherman felt I should start heading back and I took their advice. The water rose around a 1 foot and paddling on any side creek resulted in the water running backwards up the creek. And around noon, the dam release must have been stopped because the river dropped very quickly and then water flowed out of the creeks, it was very strange to watch.
Scenery - The wildlife was great, saw two eagles, egrets, turtles, osprey, turkey vultures, and a beaver. I ate lunch at a house for sale and did a quick tour, very nice.
Hazards - Those pesky hidden stumps along the river's edge.
