Put In - Virginia Wildlife Access ramp where US 1 crosses the Roanoke River. Small boat ramp, very busy and no facilities. No launch fees either.
Distance/Time - 9.3 miles/4 hours
Difficulty - Hard, requires being aware of moving water and motor boats. I ended up putting on the dogs life preserver as I was fearful of the current and under water snags.
Trip Directions - I started with the idea of making it to the Kerr Lake dam, but after 2 hours of paddling I was only half way because of the fast current. Ended up finding Allen Creek and had a nice paddle up this quiet creek. I did not have the GPS loaded with the correct maps, so I had no idea what creeks or access points existed. Thus, I was running slightly blind and had to ask fishermen were I was. After getting home I was surprised to see the many areas to explore in this area. Next time the dam!
Scenery - Busy boating area and for some reason not as much wildlife as I would have expected. Turtles for sure and various birds. Not one egret on this section.
Hazards - moving water and underwater snags. Had to be extremely careful.
