Put In - The boathouse and launch are located at the end of 33rd Street in Butner, NC. A very easy trip from Raleigh, take Highway 50 north to Creedmoor, 56 west to 33rd till it dead ends into the entrance to the lake. It costs 3 dollars to launch and the lake is open year round from dawn to dusk. Most maps show the lake named as Lake Butner or Butnier, but the real name is RD Holt.
Distance/Time - 6.2 miles/4 hours
Difficulty - Easy
Trip Directions - I stayed on the southern end of the lake. Next trip I will head to the northern section. The dam is very interesting as you can walk on the large spillway and a cove to the right of the dam is blocked by a large levee or is just an extension of the dam itself. Another small portion of the lake is behind the levee, but no way to get there.
Scenery - Very quiet lake and many nice coves to explore. Two community centers exist along the lake and it was nice to explore the grounds of both. Not as much wildlife as I would have expected since no one really uses the lake much. Saw an osprey, one egret at the dam spillway and that was about it.
Hazards - Hydrilla can be found in most of the shallow areas.
